报告摘要:
The quest for cleaner air, the threats of climate change, and the according transformation of the energy system are foremost issues in a more sustainable development. Combustion of fossil fuels is increasingly regarded as a problematic technology, and many countries have set goals towards a more significant share of renewables. Combustion science today must reach beyond its classical role, however. Both, combustion processes with a lower carbon signature and reduced emissions, relying on new system approaches and alternative fuels, are being developed, while on the larger scale, process integration is desired in a future energy perspective. The lecture will attempt to provide food for discussion against this background and focus on some aspects of combustion-related research with examples of our own and collaborative work. Specifically, the chemical reactions that release the energy stored in the fuel determine its combustion characteristics and its fate towards undesirable emissions. Advanced spectroscopic and mass spectrometric methods permit to investigate the combustion chemistry in detail, whereas combustion models and their validation by experiments play important roles to link laboratory results to practical systems. Key issues will include the reactions at low temperatures for conventional and alternative fuels and their mixtures and the formation of toxic species and soot precursors.
