Biography
Dr. San-Mou Jeng received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University
in 1984 and is currently a full professor at University of Cincinnati. He has established a well-equipped laboratory for research, test and evaluation of gas turbine combustion and aviation fire safety. The research foci of the laboratory are low emissions gas turbine combustion, liquid fuel atomization, air/fuel mixing, fuel lean ignition and blow out limit, combustion dynamics, high altitude relight, alternative fuel combustion, fuel thermal stability and fuel injectors and advanced optical diagnostics.
Abstract
The demand on Aviation Gas Turbine Engines is continuously increasing. The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) reported an expected 34% increase in the flights of commercial air carriers in the period 2010-2020. Pollutant emissions emanating from Aircrafts are of concern because of their considerable harmful impact on the environment. Currently, three combustion concepts are proposed to reduce NOx emissions: Lean Premixed (LP) Combustion, Lean Direct Injection (LDI) and Rich burn, Quick quench, Lean Burn (RQL) combustion. All three methods avoid stoichiometry in order to reduce the flame temperature and NOx emissions. This talk will overview these combustion concepts and combustion dynamics issues associated with gas turbine combustion.
